His nature: extremely intelligent… devoted… independent…

Dog standards tell us very little about his character, although they do mention that it is a cheerful, self-confident and extremely intelligent dog, somewhat aloof with strangers, alert, faithful but independent. This is the true nature of the Tibetan spaniel who thrills his numerous owners.

Above all, the Tibetan spaniel is a watch-dog, performing the role of an alarm bell, though without any aggressiveness towards people. He chooses elevated positions to watch over his surroundings and this quality makes him truly original. Despite this, he is not allowed to trouble the peaceful hours of meditation in the monastery and because of this, has never become a yappy dog. In rare cases, an educational deficiency could result in a barking animal. Although he shows no aggressiveness towards humans, total submission is not characteristic of this breed. He is a very loving dog and in keeping with his origins, willingly remains close to the monks. He is also a very clever dog. He has a good memory and those who handle him with delicate care and coherence may well be astonished by his performances.

Most females are very loving mothers and, as a consequence of the natural adaptation of this race, give birth easily.

Often called “Tibbie” by his fans, the Tibetan spaniel loves company and his love for his family never stops growing.

Dog and child ?

Generally speaking, dogs love children. However, a child must learn how to behave with a dog and he in turn must learn, as early as possible, that a child does not represent any danger to him. On the contrary, child and dog can become the very best of playmates.

As with all dogs, the Tibetan spaniel will never recognise a child as his master. But, if the child respects him, they may well share a very special and extraordinary friendship. In general, both have a lot of pleasure in training and practicing tricks. For example : giving a paw, turning around in circles, hiding an eye with a paw, along with many other tricks, but caution should be given in not overworking the dog. Any tricks involving jumping should be taught only once the animal is fully grown.

Generalities

Tibetan spaniels are generally very sturdy and healthy dogs. A balanced diet, good care and sufficient outdoor exercise is the best assurance for good health.

Daily walks, including mountainside treks are much appreciated by these animals and you will be surprised by his great jumping capabilities and agility.

Due to his origins deriving from long hours of prayer and meditations in the monasteries, the Tibetan spaniel easily adapts to long periods of silence.
